{"id":3200,"date":"2025-07-18T17:47:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-18T17:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/comprodiverso.com\/?p=3200"},"modified":"2025-07-18T17:47:15","modified_gmt":"2025-07-18T17:47:15","slug":"actions-to-promote-inclusion-of-senior-citizens-in-the-work-environment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/comprodiverso.com\/en\/labor-inclusion\/actions-to-promote-inclusion-of-senior-citizens-in-the-work-environment\/","title":{"rendered":"Actions to promote the inclusion of older adults in the work environment"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Due to demographic dynamics, the older adult population is growing worldwide, so it is important to have measures of non-discrimination and awareness of aging, as well as to guarantee the rights of older adults and empower them in the labor environment. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eliminating abuse and mistreatment of the elderly<\/strong>as well as <strong>to promote the inclusion of older adults in all aspects of their lives.<\/strong>requires<strong> actions framed in the cultural context of each region<\/strong>for <strong>being an older person is experienced differently in different societies<\/strong>but there are <strong>basic general guidelines to be followed in order to channel efforts in the work environment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance with the <strong>Federal Law on the Rights of Older Persons<\/strong>, <strong>in Mexico<\/strong> are considered to be part of this population <strong>those who are 60 years of age or older<\/strong>. Likewise, the <strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong> recognizes that, in <strong>developing countries<\/strong>a <strong>elderly person is someone 60 years of age<\/strong>while in <strong>developed countries the age is 65<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <strong>projections prepared by the United Nations Organization<\/strong> (UN), it is estimated that <strong>between 2019 and 2030 the number of people over 60 years old will grow by 38%<\/strong>i.e., it will pass <strong>1 billion to 1.4 billion<\/strong>. This growth will be most visible in developing countries such as Mexico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Y, <strong>by 2050<\/strong>it is estimated that <strong>one out of every six people globally will be over 65 years of age<\/strong>which represents <strong>2 billion inhabitants worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why may older adults be in situations of vulnerability and discrimination?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the face of this population increase, it is essential to <strong>adoption of measures against discrimination, abuse, isolation, neglect and all forms of mistreatment<\/strong> that undermines the <strong>the ability of older adults to lead full working, social, political, economic and cultural lives<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this end, it is important to remember that <strong>vulnerability is not inherent to old age<\/strong>but has <strong>origin in social, economic and cultural factors<\/strong>such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>discrimination and social exclusion;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lack of access to health services;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lack of educational, employment and economic opportunities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>negative image of aging and old age;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>insufficient financial income (pension or otherwise);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>loss of family and social roles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>loss of health and physical and mental capacities;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weakened family and social support networks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is necessary to bear in mind that <strong>the inequality and vulnerability that older people may experience are interrelated with gender identity, ethnic and racial origin, sexual orientation, economic class, the presence of a disability and health factors.<\/strong>. For this reason, <strong>preventing abuse and mistreatment becomes an integral task that crosses different conditions and contexts.<\/strong> of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Actions to combat prejudices about older adults that hinder their inclusion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>These actions, based on intergenerational solidarity, in addition to providing a<strong> aging with dignity<\/strong>allow <strong>improving the health of the elderly<\/strong> y <strong>reduce disability and mortality<\/strong>. In this sense, we also seek to <strong>combat the negative associations of old age with illness, disability or unproductiveness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to promote the inclusion of older adults, in a <strong>particular level <\/strong>you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>combating ageism<\/strong> changing the way we think about age and the discourse around old age that generates prejudices and stereotypes;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>promoting a culture of active and healthy aging<\/strong> that eradicates the negative representation associated with illness, disability or unproductiveness;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>fostering the social inclusion of the elderly within their communities<\/strong>;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>strengthening social networks <\/strong>and supportive family members;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>encouraging the participation of older people in decision making<\/strong> by respecting their opinion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>From <strong>institutional way is possible<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>form multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary teams that are trained and sensitized on this issue<\/strong> that can identify cases of mistreatment, emphasizing prevention, attention and referral of these cases;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>generate nationwide awareness and sensitization campaigns on abuse and maltreatment<\/strong> in the elderly, with a rights and gender perspective, that promote intergenerational participation and the participation of all levels of society;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>to improve the efficiency of the services that provide legal assistance in cases of violence against the elderly<\/strong> through training and sensitization of personnel in these areas, with a cross-cutting and inter-institutional approach;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>provide training courses for caregivers <\/strong>that contribute to the improvement of family care strategies and favor the reduction of stress and burnout;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>strengthening pension systems<\/strong>The provision of decent pensions for the elderly is of paramount importance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Older workers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>With respect to what can be done from the <strong>organizations and workplaces to effectively include older adults in their workplaces.<\/strong>There are several strategies to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>International Labor Organization (ILO)<\/strong> remember that there are <strong>workers who, due to advancing age, encounter greater difficulties in terms of employment and occupation<\/strong>. To address these issues in a balanced manner and ensure that employment problems are not shifted from one population group to another, the ILO makes the following recommendations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Promote equality of opportunity and treatment<\/strong> of workers regardless of age. This translates into the implementation of measures and programs that guarantee that all the <strong>workforce have access to<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>career counseling and placement services;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>promotion and fair distribution of tasks;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>remuneration for work of equal value;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>social security measures and social benefits;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and health and safety measures<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Implement measures to ensure that older workers continue to work under satisfactory conditions.<\/strong>such as<strong> <\/strong>as:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>correct working and environmental conditions<\/strong> that may accelerate the aging process;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>changing the way work is organized and the organization of work schedules<\/strong> in relation to the possibilities of older workers;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>adapting the workstation and its tasks<\/strong> using all technical means available and, in particular, by applying the <strong>principles of ergonomics<\/strong>for <strong>preserving health, preventing accidents and maintaining work capacity<\/strong>;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>maintaining a more systematic surveillance of workers' health status<\/strong>;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>to encourage the progressive reduction of working time <\/strong>of older workers who so request;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>increasing paid annual leave based on seniority<\/strong> or age;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>allow older workers to organize their working time and leisure time at their own convenience<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preparation and access to the retreat. <\/strong>This is one of the fundamental aspects for older workers, so it is necessary:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>ensuring a gradual transition between a professional life and a free-lance regime<\/strong>where a worker's transition to retirement is voluntary;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>making the age of eligibility for old-age benefits flexible<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A date to remember the importance of these actions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Appointed by the<strong> United Nations General Assembly in 2011<\/strong>the<strong> June 15 is World Day for Elder Abuse Awareness Day <\/strong>to reflect on the<strong> physical, mental and health problems that make older adults victims of actions that cause them physical and emotional distress and harm.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objective of this day is to <strong>to encourage individuals, communities and governments to implement strategies that raise awareness of aging, empower older adults and guarantee their rights<\/strong>as well as <strong>eliminating poverty in this sector of the population and promoting conditions that enable societies and families to provide protection and care<\/strong> those who are aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which of these measures for the inclusion of older adults in the workplace are already implemented in your
